We can all appreciate the hum and drum of a big engine, but when it comes to fuel efficiency and low CO2 emissions, a smaller engine often makes more sense, without necessarily compromising on power. The automotive industry is under constant pressure to develop engines that are more fuel efficient and eco-friendly, and rightfully so.
Ford for instance, has developed a 999cc three cylinder turbocharged engine capable of producing 92kW, the same power as its 1.6 used in the Ford Focus, but with considerably improved fuel consumption and emissions. The 1.0 litre engine will make its debut in South Africa when the Ford EcoSport reaches our shores in 2013.
This newly developed engine weighs 30kg less than the 1.6 with a CO2 emissions rating of just 114g/km when used in the Ford Focus. Ford plans on using this ‘EcoBoost’ engine more extensively in the future and expects to see in upwards of 800 000 in use in 2015. Is this the engine of the future?
